Succulent lantern planter DIY

I bring you….a succulent lantern planter DIY!
This Christmas, Chris and I made an unusual gift out of an Ikea lantern and some free wood samples
from Home Depot—thus combining three of our favorite things (succulents, Ikea, and free things)

Materials:

• 1 BORRBY lantern from Ikea ($7)
• 4 2×3 wood flooring samples from Home Depot (free)
• succulents (free if you ask friends for cuttings)
• saw
• dirt

Total Cost: $7

Excuse the weird changes in color from photo to photo—I have no good excuse.

Here’s the BORRBY lantern from Ikea.

It even has a convenient craft-access door!

One of the succulents waiting for its new home. 

These are the free flooring samples from Home Depot.
They come in all types of wood finish, but we just ended up using the back of them

Stick in one of the wood samples and measure how tall you want it to be.
Width-wise, it is already conveniently the right size!

Cut each of the 4 wood pieces to the right height.

Lay those bad boys in there.

Use the end cut-off pieces to lay loosely on the bottom, just to keep the dirt from falling out too much. 

Fill it with dirt and your succulents!
